Can you remember the last PowerPoint presentation you saw?
Neither can I.
Can you even remember one of the key points made by the presenter?
Right now there are millions of PowerPoint presentations being delivered.
Most will have too much text and far too few images.
Very few will have embedded relevant video.
All will be too long.
None will be memorable.
But that’s ok isn’t it? I mean the presentation will be available for download after the meeting won’t it?
Well it’s ok as an excuse but nobody ever refers back to a PowerPoint slide unless it is the only source for new complex data. And if it has complex data on it – what’s it doing in a PowerPoint presentation????
In as much as video is for the messages which can’t be delivered effectively using stills and text, PowerPoint is for speaker support.
I once heard a comment after a PowerPoint presentation in which the presenter was said to have used his slides ‘much like a drunk man uses a lamp post – more for support than illumination’.
Phew. I’m going for a lie down now.
Run that last presentation past me again I need some sleep.
