Back in the day we used to spend weeks putting together a pitch for video work. We would research the competition – their strong points and weaknesses – and whilst concentrating on a creative response to the brief – we would do everything we could to scupper their attempts. For example, if we knew they outsourced their editing we would announce during the pitch;
“of course, some companies outsource their editing, if you do that then you have precious little control without cranking the budget up through the roof”
Sneaky eh? But it worked and we won lots of business.
But, that was then…when a client company would ask just three or four production companies to pitch. Not now though.
I recently received an invitation to pitch for a 2 minute video for a local council with a budget guide of £3k. Perfectly reasonable you might say. And you’d be right. However, when I asked how many companies they had invited to pitch a charming young man cheerfully told me that the tender had been sent out to 30 companies.
30 companies!!! And what’s more, so far 22 of them tendered for the business!!!
Now I’m all for giving value for money, and I’m more than happy to enter a competitive pitch – but against 30 companies, and for £3k?
Yer ‘avin a larf arncha?
So here’s a revolutionary idea: If you want to get the best creativity at the best price, ask three or four video production companies to pitch for the business,
but
give each one a different budget to work to…
In that way you will get four good proposals at four different budget levels and you can then mix and match the ideas whilst choosing just one winner.
Not fair? Of course it’s fair, and us video producers won’t mind a bit. Try it.
(make sure that Meantime Media in Stroud is one of the companies you ask
– of course)
